Cleveland Way : Whitby to Staithes

My second long Cleveland Way walk - this time from Whitby back to Staithes - which the 'wrong way' when compared to the direction in which the Cleveland way is normally described.

Again the route starts and ends at sea level yet travels along cliff tops.  It returns back down to sea level for the beaches at Sandsend and Runswick Bay.

We drove from our holiday cottage in Staithes to the Whitby park and ride & took the bus into town. So my route starts at Whitby bus station.  Again, Val & her Mum drove home after a day in town.

My route as recorded by ViewRanger

It was quite a misty day, and I was experimenting with the phone camera settings, so the images aren't quite as crisp as I'd hoped.

My trek was instantly interrupted by the sight of a stream engine in Whitby BR station.

Something I wasn't expecting.  A garden 'commemorating' the bombardment of Whitby

Climbing out of Sandsend
Looking back at Sandsend.  You can still just make out the Abbey.

More mine spoils.  It's been there over 100 years, yet still nothing grows.

They don't call these the Ironstone Valleys for nothing.

Alas, I can't take the Whitby to Loftus rail tunnel, I must take the steps.
Everything is well signposted.

The way ahead

As I said, well signposted.
