Only two detours today - the Devil's Punchbowl, (the third I've now visited out of the five (?) in the country), and Segsbury Camp - another Iron Age hill fort.
My route, as recorded by ViewRanger |
Ready for the off ! |
Still trying to get a good image of that horse ! |
Back to the Ridgeway - the path is wide and solid here. |
My first glimpse of Didcot through the haze in the far distance |
A rare long distance view to the south |
Nearly three miles into the walk already |
I am now here ! |
The way ahead |
But before that - a detour through Rapeseed flowers to the Devil's Punchbowl |
Panorama of the Devil's Punchbowl. The sides were much steeper than this image portrays |
Back to the Ridgeway, which stretches into the distance |
Didcot becomes clearer |
Occasionally, the view open's up like this ... |
... but often your view is of neighbouring trees and hedges |
This looks like a good spot for lunch |
Panoramic view from the seat |
Another memorial |
Ring ditch and embankment of Segsbury Camp |
View of Didcot from Segsbury Camp embankment |
Cowslips at Segsbury Camp |
Buttercups at Segsbury Camp |
Here, the chalk of the Ridgeway path is so smooth, white and hard it's almost blinding |
This guy followed me all day |
Oh ! A new map ! |
Didcot gets clearer and larger (Zoomed view) |
Just four and a bit miles to go |
The width and depth of the views (nearly always northwards) were amazing |
I've now traveled to here. |
Lord Wantage's Monument |
Some detail on Lord Wantage's Monument |
The Ridgeway is now a multi-lane highway ! |
The path gets wider and wider |
Just 1 1/2 miles to go. |
A hare |
Our first clear view of Harwell Research |
The wide stretch of grass to the left isn't the Ridgeway, but is a horse racing gallop |
The car park is in the far distance |
We're in West Berkshire now |
And that's it for the day ! |
